3rd Las-Ay Festival

The 3rd Las-ay Festival was celebrated last August 24, 2012 at the Gigaquit Beach. Gigaquit Rhum or Las-ay is an exotic and innovative rum product from the vast nipa palms of Gigaquit. The festival was celebrated to remind us that even before, 100 years ago that this rum already existed and became part of the livelihood of Lumad Gigaquitnons.

The celebration has two sets of activities that were simultaneously conducted.  One activity was the Awarding Ceremony of the Reinforced Basketball and Beach Volleyball Tournaments, the other was the main event of the celebration  . . . the Wine Mixing Competition with Flaring.

The contest is about enhancing the value of the taste of our own Gigaquit Las-Ay liquor which should be the main ingredient for the wine mixing preparation. The contest was participated by the HRM students of different schools in Surigao City. They were from Surigao State College of Technology and from Philippine Women’s University. The participants proudly presented and showed-off their talents and amazing skills in preparing the wine mixes with exaggerated flaring of bottles.

The Las- Ay Festival truly showed various ways in raising the awareness of the public about the quality, the potential and opportunities waiting for the “Gigaquit Rum” in the market. It is hoped that through this festival, the desire to promote and market the product, and the improvement of its packaging will result in the increase of the nipa sap gatherers and rum processors. Thus, other opportunities in the tourism industry of the municipality will also increase.
